Baker, Twins Continue Road Success In Upending Rangers

Posted: 12:29 am CDT July 19, 2009

(Sports Network) - Scott Baker allowed only one run in eight strong innings, and Michael Cuddyer homered and drove in two runs, as the Minnesota Twins clinched their fifth consecutive road series with a 4-1 win over Texas.

Cuddyer finished 2-for-4 and scored twice for the Twins, who have won 12 of 17 on the road since starting the season 9-17. Justin Morneau and Carlos Gomez each drove in a run in the victory, Minnesota's third straight.

Baker (8-7) improved to 4-0 in his last five road starts, yielding six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Joe Nathan earned his 25th save of the season.

"Just moving the fastball around, and throwing a lot of breaking balls early in the count," Baker said of how he beat the Rangers. "They're a very aggressive team, and we just tried to combat that the best we know how."

Nelson Cruz homered to account for Texas' offense, as the Rangers lost their fourth consecutive game. Cruz finished the game 3-for-4, and Scott Feldman (8-3) was assessed the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in six innings.

"I don't think it's pressing, I think we're a little too (relaxed)," Texas' Marlon Byrd said. "We need to turn up the intensity a little bit. I don't want our team to get too comfortable -- we could fall out of (the division race) very quickly."

Minnesota grabbed the lead in the second with a pair of runs. Morneau singled to begin the frame and Cuddyer scored the runner with a double. Cuddyer crossed home on a single from Gomez.

Fresh off his runner-up finish in the Home Run Derby, Cruz cut Texas' deficit in half with a solo homer in the fourth.

Cuddyer, though, answered with a solo shot for Minnesota in the fifth, restoring the Twins' two-run cushion at 3-1.

Baker dominated the Rangers after giving up the home run, allowing only two walks and a single through the seventh to maintain the lead.

Morneau's RBI single in the eighth put Minnesota ahead by three, and Baker set down Texas in order in the eighth to bridge the gap to Nathan, who pitched around a Cruz infield single to seal the win.

Game Notes
