Detroit Turns Away Cubs To Remain Hot At Home

Posted: 11:14 pm CDT June 24, 2009

(Sports Network) - Adam Everett legged out the go-ahead infield RBI hit in the sixth inning and Detroit turned away a Chicago threat in the ninth inning to beat the Cubs, 5-3, in the middle installment of a three-game series.

Miguel Cabrera and Gerald Laird hit solo homers for the Tigers, who have won six in a row.

Rick Porcello allowed seven hits and two runs over five-plus innings in the start for the Tigers, while Zach Miner (5-1) tossed the sixth frame to pick up the win. Fernando Rodney converted his 15th straight save in as many chances by escaping a jam in the ninth.

"That was a tough one, we walked too many people, gave them too many opportunities, but we got through it," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland.

Rich Harden (4-4) was saddled with the defeat after surrendering four hits and four runs -- two earned -- over 5 1/3 innings.

After the game, Harden certainly wasn't in a talking mood.

"It was an ugly game and I wasn't happy with my performance," said Harden. "Just write that. I don't have too much else to say.

Geovany Soto hit a solo homer for the Cubs, who went 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base. Chicago has lost three straight following a four-game win streak.

"There were a lot of runners they left on and we left on, but we made pitches when we needed to to keep us in the game," said Laird. "That's all you need to do, play defense and pitch, keep our offense in the game. We were able to pull it off in the end."

Mike Fontenot's fielder's choice scored Milton Bradley in the top of the sixth to tie the score, but Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge drew walks from Harden in the bottom half.

Aaron Heilman took over on the hill with one out and allowed a single to Magglio Ordonez, loading the bases. Laird lined out, but Everett then hit a ball toward the hole on the left side. Third baseman Jake Fox dove for the ball, but his throw to first was late, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Curtis Granderson then walked to force in another run for a 4-2 difference.

Fox hit a sacrifice fly to right field, but Kosuke Fukudome grounded out to leave a runner in scoring position in the seventh.

Carlos Marmol walked Cabrera with the bases full in the bottom of the eighth before Rodney escaped trouble in the ninth. Derrek Lee walked and Micah Hoffpauir singled. Bradley then struck out, Fox flied out and Fukudome went down on strikes to end the game.

Cabrera homered to left-center field leading off the fourth before Chicago tied it the next inning.

Laird then homered to left-center with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
