Minnesota Timberwolves 2009 Draft Preview

(Sports Network) - The Kevin McHale era in Minnesota is over.

New basketball chief David Kahn is now running things and hopes to build on a nucleus that includes one of the top power forwards in the game, Al Jefferson, along with guard Randy Foye and forward Kevin Love.

McHale stumbled on recent draft days, taking studs like Brandon Roy and O.J. Mayo and then dealing them. Kahn has three first round picks at his disposal this year and needs a natural point guard along with some frontcourt help for Jefferson, who is coming off an ACL injury, and Love.

It's pretty clear that Kahn is looking to move up and the rumors are swirling. A potential deal mentioned has Minnesota sending the sixth overall pick and Love to Memphis for the second pick. In that scenario, the Wolves would take UConn center Hasheem Thabeet. Another rumor has Minnesota making a strong play for Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, offering all three of its first-round picks (Nos. 6, 18 and 28) to get it done.

If the Wolves can't move, they will choose between Stephen Curry and Tyreke Evans at No. 6. Evans has the bigger upside but Kahn is far more comfortable with Curry, the best pure shooter in this year's draft.

If the Wolves stand pat and choose quantity over quality, why not remake the whole backcourt with Jeff Teague at No. 18? The Wake guard is a solid player who could team with Curry as interchangeable parts.

Late in the first round USC forward Taj Gibson, a nice athlete with length and a soft touch around the basket could be a nice fit..

Key Players under contract: F Al Jefferson; F Mike Miller; F Brian Cardinal; F Ryan Gomes; F Kevin Love; G Randy Foye; F Corey Brewer; F Mark Madsen; G Sebastian Telfair

Draft picks: 1st round (6th overall, 18th overall, 28th overall), 2nd round (45th overall, 47th overall).
