Brewers Blank Braves Again; Fielder Hits 2 HRs

Posted: 10:19 pm CDT June 6, 2009

(Sports Network) - Prince Fielder hit a pair of solo home runs and five Brewers pitchers combined for another shutout of the Braves, as Milwaukee blanked Atlanta, 3-0, in the middle contest of this three-game series.

The Braves have not scored a run in 22 innings, having lost a 4-0 decision to the Brewers in Friday's series-opener. Atlanta last scored in the seventh inning of a 3-2, 11-inning loss to the Cubs on Wednesday.

Jeff Suppan (4-4) took the win after holding Atlanta to six hits over 5 1/3 innings. He also walked three and struck out two. Trevor Hoffman closed the game in the ninth for his 15th save in as many opportunities, and has not given up a run in 17 innings this season.

Fielder also walked, while Craig Counsell went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Brewers, who have won three of four.

"[I was] just trying to get a good pitch that I can put the barrel on," Fielder said of his performance. "Fortunately, I was able to do that."

Javier Vazquez (4-5) had a solid start for the Braves, as he allowed only two runs on four hits over six innings. Vazquez also did not walk a batter and struck out seven, but took the loss -- Atlanta's eighth in its last 11 contests.

Martin Prado had two of Atlanta's seven hits, while Nate McLouth got his first hit as a Brave since being traded from Pittsburgh. Braves third baseman Chipper Jones left after five innings because of dizziness, but was given a clean bill of health after being examined in the locker room.

The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Fielder began the inning with a homer to right field. Jason Kendall then opened the sixth with a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Suppan. Counsell followed with a double to plate the run and give the Brewers a two-run lead.

Atlanta had a chance to score in the bottom of the sixth, as Brian McCann led off with a triple, but he was tagged out at home trying to score on a fielder's choice hit from Garret Anderson.

Suppan then walked Jeff Francoeur and was removed in favor of Todd Coffey, who struck out Martin Prado as the Braves executed a double steal. Coffey then walked pinch-hitter Greg Norton before being removed for Mitch Stetter, who fanned Kelly Johnson to end the inning.

"We had some chances tonight, just didn't get the hit," Francoeur said. "It just sucks right now because our pitching is pitching their asses off, and we can't get them a run. I mean, not even one."

Milwaukee went ahead by three in the seventh on another leadoff shot from Fielder -- this time off Eric O'Flaherty -- and the Braves didn't threaten again. They went down in order in the seventh and eighth, and couldn't rally around a two-out single from Johnson in the ninth as Hoffman sealed the victory.
