Hart's Homer Propels Brewers Past Cards In Pitchers' Duel

Posted: 7:19 pm CDT May 16, 2009

(Sports Network) - Corey Hart provided the only offense in the contest with a solo home run to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 1-0 shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals during a pitchers' duel in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium.

Jeff Suppan (3-3) was solid in seven innings, allowing six hits with two strikeouts and two walks to pick up the win for Milwaukee, which has won four in a row. The opener of this series was supposed to take place Friday, but was postponed and rescheduled for Monday.

Suppan, who pitched for the Cardinals from 2004-06, improved to 7-2 lifetime against St. Louis.

"That emotion, regardless of if you've thrown well against a team in the past or thrown poorly, shouldn't take away...the preparation has to be the same," said Suppan. "It's doing it on the field, it's making pitches on the field."

Trevor Hoffman retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to collect his ninth save of the season. Ryan Braun and Hart had the only two hits of the tilt for the Brewers.

Adam Wainwright (3-2) was sensational in an eight-inning start, giving up just the one run on two hits with seven strikeouts, but suffered the loss for St. Louis, which started a nine-game homestand.

Shane Robinson went 2-for-4 to pace the Cardinals offense, which failed to score a run on six hits. Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, Joe Thurston, and Wainwright each had a hit for the Cardinals, who have dropped three of their last four contests.

Hart's two-out, solo homer to right-center field in the second inning proved to be the only run of the game, as both starting pitchers dominated the game.

"It was just a terrible pitch," said Wainwright. "A guy like Hart, he's really strong that way (right-center) and you can't make a pitch in the middle of the plate to him like that. He'll hurt you."

Wainwright retired seven straight batters at one point, while Suppan retired nine in a row.

Back-to-back two-out singles from Thurston and Wainwright put runners on the corners for St. Louis in the seventh. But Suppan got Skip Schumaker to ground out and prevent any runs from crossing the plate.

Milwaukee had a chance to extend its lead with runners on first and second and no outs in the eighth, but the Brewers failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity. After Hart reached base on Thurston's fielding error and Bill Hall walked, Jason Kendall went down swinging, pinch-hitter Craig Counsell flied out, and Rickie Weeks fanned to end the threat.

Mark DiFelice and Mitch Stetter combined to retire St. Louis in order in the eighth.

Game Notes

The Cardinals left seven men on base, while the Brewers stranded five...Milwaukee went 10-5 against St. Louis last season, with a 6-3 mark at Busch...Kendall needs just three hits for 2,000 in his career. Kendall ranks eighth all-time among those who have appeared in at least 1,000 games as a catcher. He is behind Johnny Bench (2,048).
