CAMBRIDGE, Wis. -- Cambridge residents are bursting with pride after hometown boy Matt Kenseth won NASCAR's coveted Daytona 500 on Sunday night.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportAmong those celebrating were members of Kenseth's family."We were just overjoyed," said Kelly Maruszewski, Matt's sister. "I can't even explain how excited we were. There was yelling, there was crying there was jumping up and down. There was kissing, hugging it was craziness."Maruszewski said her family doesn't normally throw a Daytona race day party, but this year they did."It's the first time we've ever gotten together for the race," she said. "Usually, you have to stay at least 2 houses away from my Dad on race day. He gets pretty nervous."But the family was together when Matt was declared the winner."It was really exciting," said Roy Kenseth, Matt's father. "My stomach was in knots during the race. But once it was over, we all let out a holler and cheer. It was a fun time."Roy Kenseth said a win at Daytona is big, but challenging."You have to have everything go your way," said Ron Kenseth. "You have to have a good car. You have to have luck and we had a little bit of everything yesterday. We had a good car. Matt just escaped the wreck and the rain came at just the right time."Daytona is where NASCAR began. The race and city are wrapped in racing history, WISC-TV reported."The famous people like Earnhardt and Petty have won that race," said Ron Kenseth. "It's a feather in your hat if you can win the Daytona 500."Now, his son's name will be added alongside those famous names."Even with all his success, he doesn't feel like he's famous," Ron Kenseth explained about Matt. "He still feels like he's just a racer from Cambridge.Matt Kenseth's win came on his grandmother's 95th birthday."I just wish I knew how to get a hold of Matt and tell him thank you for winning on my birthday," said Edith Kenseth to Matt's sister.Edith Kenseth said she'd like to take a ride in one of Matt's cars."I often said wouldn't it be fun for me to get in his car and go around a track someday," she said. "Maybe I'll do that someday."But for now, the family is concentrating on the business of winning."I look at victory lane for about 2 seconds then I go, 'I can't believe this.' Then, I open the top of my computer and get to my Web site to get stuff ready for my sale and send out my e-mail," said Maruszewski.According to her, more than 100 people joined the online Kenseth Fan Club last night, and they were shopping moments after the store opened on Monday."I looked on the Web site, then decided to come over here and see what I could get," said Kenseth fan, Jeff Henderson.Henderson said he'll be back later in the week for official Daytona merchandise.Maruszewski said she expects her first shipment of Daytona T-shirts on Tuesday with more merchandise arriving later in the week.
