Nystrom's SH Goal Lifts Flames Over Wild

Posted: 11:20 pm CST December 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - Eric Nystrom's first goal in 25 games, coming early in the third period, sent Calgary past Minnesota, 2-1, in a Northwest Division tussle at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Daymond Langkow provided the other tally for the Flames, who have won three in a row and five of six. Miikka Kiprusoff won by making 23 stops.

Stephane Veilleux scored for the Wild, who suffered their fourth defeat in their last six outings. Josh Harding lost despite stopping 27-of-29 shots.

Nystrom broke free of a Minnesota defender inside the Wild blueline, skated in alone and tucked a shot under Harding at the left post for a short-handed goal at the 8:56 mark.

The 25-year-old, who is the son of four-time Stanley Cup winner and Islanders great Bob Nystrom, hadn't scored since his only other goal of the year on November 1 at Los Angeles.

"Good things happen when you go to the net," Nystrom noted. "Every once in a while, the penalty kill gets a little lax thinking about scoring, and I got a little jump and it was huge in a divisional game."

Calgary clamped down defensively from there, and missed a 3-on-1 break late in regulation before Harding was pulled for an extra attacker. Jarome Iginla narrowly missed an insurance tally in the final seconds but the Flames nabbed the win.

"It just came down to one little thing and though guys really played hard," said Wild head coach Jacques Lemaire. "What can you do?"

Langkow's score -- a goal which unintentionally deflected off his skate from a Todd Bertuzzi pass -- provided the Flames an early advantage with just over two minutes left in the first period.

Veilleux tied the game on a disputed goal with 15 seconds to play in the second period. His wrister from the right side hit the back of the net under the crossbar and popped out, then play continued. A review several seconds later determined the shot was good.
