Burrell, Victorino Help Phillies Top Brewers

Posted: 10:18 pm CDT September 14, 2008

(Sports Network) - Pat Burrell singled in the go-ahead run and Shane Victorino hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning, as Philadelphia pulled out a 7-3 win over Milwaukee in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Ryan Howard finished 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for Philadelphia, which has won the first three contests of this four-game set. Scott Eyre (4-0) took the victory for getting two outs in relief of Joe Blanton, who gave up three runs in seven innings of work.

Guillermo Mota (5-6) took the loss as he allowed the go-ahead run to reach base in the eighth, while Brian Shouse followed in relief and allowed three runs to cross the plate. Dave Bush was solid in a six-inning start, giving up three runs on five hits.

Ray Durham hit a two-run homer and Mike Cameron added a solo shot for Milwaukee, which has lost six of seven.

With the game knotted at three runs apiece entering the home eighth, Jayson Werth slapped a single through the left side off Mota. Shouse was summoned in relief, and Chase Utley bunted to move the runner over to second.

Shouse intentionally walked Howard to get to Burrell, who singled to left. Ryan Braun made a strong throw home, but it was wide of the plate, allowing Werth to slide in safely before catcher Jason Kendall could bring the ball over, making it a 4-3 contest.

Victorino followed by hitting his 12th homer of the season to give the Phillies a four-run cushion. Eyre got the first out of the ninth inning, and Brad Lidge nailed down the other two to seal the victory.

Durham's two-run, two-out homer in the first gave the Brewers a 2-0 advantage. The Phillies trimmed their deficit in half in the fourth, when Utley led off with a double and Howard singled to put runners on the corners. Burrell grounded into a double play to bring Utley home.

Cameron's leadoff homer in the fifth, on a fastball Blanton located directly in the middle of the plate, restored Milwaukee's two-run advantage. But in the fifth, Bush hit the leadoff batter Utley with a pitch. Howard then managed to strong-arm a pitch to left field that sailed over the wall, tying the game at 3-3.

Game Notes

Utley has been hit by a pitch 26 times this season, setting a new Phillies record. The old record of 25 was set by Utley last season...Howard's homer was his 44th of the season, which leads the major leagues.
