Favre Filed For Reinstatement With NFL
Updated: 11:43 am CDT July 31, 2008
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- After a meeting Wednesday with Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy, Brett Favre's agent said the retired quarterback who wants to play again could be back in Green Bay as soon as Friday.Murphy traveled to Mississippi and met with Favre and agent James "Bus" Cook on Wednesday.Murphy issued a statement saying he and Favre discussed a number of topics not related to football, including Favre's long-term relationship with the Packers. He said he considers the conversation confidential and won't release details.Murphy said he is leaving it to general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy to work on the football side of the issue.Favre has sent NFL commissioner Roger Goodell a request for reinstatement, but Goodell hasn't taken any action on it yet. Once he approves it as expected, the Packers will have 24 hours to decide whether to trade Favre, release him or put him on the roster.Cook told reporters outside his office in Mississippi that Favre would love to go back to Green Bay.
Reports Say Packers Offer Incentive For Favre To Stay Retired
Murphy apparently opened his wallet on his trip to Mississippi.Sources told WTMJ-TV that the Packers offered Favre $20 million over 10 years to stay retired. It doesn't appear that Favre accepted the offer, because he still wants to play.Favre's agent told reporters outside his office in Hattiesburg that Favre could be in Green Bay as soon as Friday. The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported on its Web site that the Packers offered Favre "a substantial salary" to stay away. The Packers don't have a full practice Thursday. They will lift weights, attend meetings and review plays. They'll also hear from a guest speaker: former Bush White House press secretary Ari Fleischer. The meeting with Fleischer, an expert in how to handle a crisis, apparently has nothing to do with the Favre situation.Coach Mike McCarthy said Fleischer's visit was booked a long time ago. He jokingly headed off any questions about the team turning to an expert in damage control."We're going to get our money's worth," the coach quipped.
