MADISON, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers have filed tampering charges against the Minnesota Vikings over what team officials believe is inappropriate contact with Brett Favre, a person familiar with the complaint told the Associated Press.
TALKBACK: What Do You Think? The source told the Associated Press that Packers officials contend interest from the Vikings helped drive Favre's sudden change of heart to return for another NFL season. He had retired last March. The source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, said Packers officials believe a league examination of telephone records will indicate more than "normal contact" between Favre and Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a former Green Bay assistant. The charges were first reported by Foxsports.com. An NFL spokesman said the league has no comment on the report.Meanwhile, Favre's agent, Bus Cook, told ESPN that he and Favre have "no definite plans to ask for reinstatement" and that it's up to the Packers to decide what to do next."It's their move," Cook said.A Packers spokesman declined comment.Favre announced his retirement in March, but in the past several weeks the quarterback has hinted that he wants to return to the NFL. Then this week in an interview with Fox News, Favre said he wants to return to the league but he doesn't feel welcome back in Green Bay. The Packers told Favre that he could return to the team as a backup, behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers.Favre currently is on the Packers' reserve/retired list. To be reinstated, Favre must write a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Once that request is approved -- a step considered a formality -- the Packers would have to release Favre or place him on their active roster.Favre is due at Lambeau Field Saturday evening to present former teammate Frank Winters for induction in the Packers Hall of Fame.So far, Favre hasn't pulled out of the event.
