Wild Pitch Helps Reds Edge Brewers

POSTED: 11:36 pm CDT July 11, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jay Bruce scored the deciding run in the top of the eighth inning on a Salomon Torres wild pitch and the Cincinnati Reds held on to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game series at Miller Park.

Edwin Encarnacion was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Bruce scored three times for the Reds, who have won six of their last eight outings. David Ross was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

Josh Fogg allowed three runs on one hit and struck out six over 5 1/3 innings for Cincinnati. Mike Lincoln (1-2) tossed a perfect seventh to pick up the win. David Weathers worked around a one-out double by Ryan Braun in the eighth and Francisco Cordero hurled a scoreless ninth to notch his 19th save.

"I felt like I commanded the ball well," said Fogg. "When I do that, that's when I have success. That's the kind of pitcher I am."

Braun also clubbed a solo home run for the Brewers, who have lost two of three. Bill Hall added a two-run double for Milwaukee, which committed three costly errors.

Manny Parra gave up five runs -- three earned -- on six hits and fanned six in 6 1/3 frames for Milwaukee. Brian Shouse (3-1) took the loss as he was charged with an unearned run.

"He moves the ball around, changes speeds," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said of Fogg.

After yielding four runs in the bottom of the sixth to fall behind 5-2, the Reds rallied with three runs in the next frame. Three consecutive hits by Joey Votto, Bruce and Ross plated one run and put runners on the corners for pinch- hitter Andy Phillips, who grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Bruce.

With David Riske on the mound for the Brewers, Jerry Hairston Jr. reached third on Mike Cameron's fielding error and Phillips was able to score the tying run.

Shouse started the eighth inning for Milwaukee and gave up a lead-off double to Encarnacion. Bruce was aboard on Hall's throwing error. Torres then entered from the bullpen and walked Ross to load the bases. After pinch-hitter Adam Dunn grounded into a fielder's choice, Bruce scampered home on a wild pitch for a 6-5 lead.

Cameron drew a one-out walk in the ninth and swiped second, but Cordero caught pinch-hitter Gabe Kapler looking to end the game.

The Reds got a lead-off bunt single from Hairston to begin the contest. A wild pitch moved him to second before Jeff Keppinger put down a sacrifice bunt. Hairston then scored on a groundout by Ken Griffey Jr.

Milwaukee quickly evened the score in the bottom of the first on Braun's 23rd home run of the season -- a two-out shot to left.

Cincinnati regained the lead in the fifth on Hairston's sacrifice fly.

Milwaukee forged ahead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Fogg plunked Rickie Weeks and walked J.J. Hardy. After Braun went down swinging, Bill Bray entered from the bullpen and fanned Prince Fielder. Corey Hart then produced the tying run with a check-swing blooper that fell in for a double.

Gary Majewski took over the mound duties and gave up a two-run double to Hall, who came in as a pinch-hitter for Russell Branyan. Cameron followed with a run-scoring single for a 5-2 lead.
