Michigan Man, Madison Woman Take Top Marathon Honors

Marino Marathoners Raise Money On The Run

Posted: 8:24 pm CDT May 25,2008

Thousands of runners laced up their sneakers on Sunday morning for the annualMadison Marathon.

Race organizers said a record number of runners registered.

Among those running, a special group called Marathoners for Marino were raising money for the Joel Marino fund. The fund was created to offer music scholarships and provide defibrillators for the community. Marino, a 31-year-old Madison resident, was killed last January.

Marino's friends said the run was a fitting tribute to him.

"It's a beautiful day," said friend and runner Carrie Kingston. "I know that he's looking down on us, smiling and probably a little embarrassed, but totally smiling."

Anyone wanting to donate to the Marino Fund can do so in care of the Madison Community Foundation. The address is P.O. Box 5010, Madison, WI 53705.

Marathon Winners

Ricky Reusser from Ann Arbor, Mich., took top honors by finishing with a time of two hours, 31 minutes and 42 seconds. The top female was Aimee Kurian, of Madison, finishing with a time of three hours, nine minutes and eight seconds.
