State's Unclaimed Property eBay Auction Under Way

The state's second unclaimed property auction began on Tuesday at 3 p.m. on eBay.

Close to 40 items will be auctioned off over seven days, including 16 jewelry lots, 11 coin lots and one large sport card lot with more than 100 collectible sports cards.

Some of the highlights include an antique rosary, a collectable Star Trek coin and eyeglasses from the turn of the century. As with last auction, there are also many pocket watches up for bid.

Under Wisconsin statute, after five years of inactivity, Wisconsin financial institutions must turn over all the contents of safe deposit boxes to the State Treasurer's office for safekeeping. The Treasurer's Office has three years to try and find the owner, then puts the items up for auction.

"There is NO time limit for collecting the unclaimed property, so if an heir comes forward, even 10 years from now, and can prove that the gold ring we auctioned off belonged to their relative, we will give them the money from the sale," State Treasurer Dawn Sass said in a news release.
