Some of Wisconsin's small town and rural areas will be on display as the Johnny Depp movie "Public Enemies" opens across the nation and in other countries Wednesday.

The movie about Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger and his gang opens nationwide Wednesday. It also opens in Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, Denmark, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

Writers and director Michael Mann used Bryan Burrough's book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34" to help craft the movie's screenplay.

Among places crews filmed were Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin Dells, Columbus, Darlington, Beaver Dam, and around Mirror Lake in Wisconsin, and Crown Point, Ind., Chicago and Los Angeles.

Depp stars as Dillinger, and Christian Bale co-stars as FBI agent Melvin Purvis. Marion Cotillard is Depp's love interest, Billie Frechette.

Extras from the movie are attending premiere parties in northern Wisconsin.

The free publication "This Week In the Northwoods" is holding screenings and parties in Woodruff Wednesday and in Eagle River Thursday.

Crews from the movie filmed in northern Wisconsin at Little Bohemia Lodge. It's the actual location where a gun battle erupted between Dillingers' gang and the federal authorities in 1934.

Besides screenings, there will also be a display of vintage cars and red carpet arrivals of movie extras. Eleven extras and the owners of Little Bohemia are expected Wednesday and seven extras are expected Thursday.
