Mark Green To Return Campaign Cash

Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Green says he'll return roughly $30,000 in campaign cash tied to Tom Delay.

Green is refunding $2,000 directly to Delay's political action committee. He also wants to donate the remaining $29,000, but state law prevents him from giving it to a charity.

Green said he's setting aside the money and asking the legislature to change the law. He said the scandal in Washington, and questions raised about Doyle fundraising have voters looking for action. That's why he's looking to give back the money.

"I think that is causing a stain to occur, or a cloud to grow, and gather that is clearly shaking people's faith,” said Green. “And it is also taking up a lot of attention on the headlines."

State Democratic Party officials criticized the move -- saying if Green really wanted to give back the money, he could donate it to a non-partisan political group, like a voter registration drive.

Green also wants state ethics reforms. He's asking for a law to stop gambling entities -- like tribes -- from donating money while a compact is being negotiated.
