MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Scott Walker said on Friday that he doesn't think he's the target of an ongoing investigation into several of his current and former aides' activities while the governor was Milwaukee County executive. Two women -- Kelly Rindfleisch and Darlene Wink -- were on Walker's staff when he was the county executive and were charged on Thursday with engaging in political fundraising while working on county time. They are the fourth and fifth people with ties to Walker who are facing charges in connection with an ongoing John Doe probe of his former staffers. The Milwaukee County district attorney is leading up the secret investigation.During a visit to tool distributor Tool Service Corp. in Wauwatosa to promote his legislative agenda, Walker told reporters that he wasn't aware of any political activity in the office."Throughout all my time as the Milwaukee County executive, I had an expressed and clear policy that county employees in my office, those in my cabinet and elsewhere, were prohibited from using county resources or county time to be involved in political activities," he said. The governor said that his request for Wink's resignation after her alleged misconduct became known demonstrates that his office took action to enforce policies against conducting campaign activities on government time."If we knew of anyone, whether it be Kelly or anyone else who was violating the rules that I clearly expressed to employees both in public and private, we would have treated that individual the same way we asked for the resignation of Darlene Wink," he said.Walker said he's confident his integrity will remain intact after the investigation is complete. He declined to say whether he had spoken to investigators, but said his campaign has been cooperating with investigators for months. He told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel last week that he hadn't.
He said he believes the investigation will reveal he and his office acted appropriately."I have every confidence that when this is completed, people will see that our integrity remains in tact," he said.Walker also declined to answer specific questions about details of the investigation because his office's cooperation with the investigation. He wouldn't say if he was aware of a secret Internet network that the employees were allegedly using or how he felt about any involvement of his aides. The governor said his office will continue to review any complaints of alleged involvement of employees who work for him now.As part of this investigation, two other former Walker associates were charged Jan. 5 with embezzling more than $60,000 from veterans and their families. Another man is charged with child enticement charges, evidence of which was allegedly discovered while investigating one of the others. The governor was visiting the Wauwatosa facility to drum up support for some of the policies that he outlined during his State of the State address earlier this week. He told attendees that they need to "cut through the red tape of government" to create new jobs. He said that businesses that are saying they have jobs, but no skilled workers "makes me want to bang my head against the wall.""My No. 1 job more than anything else as your governor is focusing on how do I help the people this state create more jobs," he said.He also asked businesses to help share the message that the state's economy is turning around.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
