MADISON, Wis. -- Naturists are trying to convince state legislators not to ban nudism at the Mazomanie Beach.
Nude bathers have been going to the Mazomanie Beach for decades and say a bill to outlaw nudism at the beach violates state and federal laws. Those against the ban said going to nude beaches is a wholesome, family activity and a major tourist draw.
"Naturists recognize the value of nude recreation not only as a matter of personal freedom, but as an important and positive contribution to the state," said Nicky Hoffman of the Naturist Society, based in Oshkosh.
Supporters of a bill, including Ralph Ovadal who has protested the beach for years, said the nude beach could lead to sexual scandal.
"I'm telling you, it's just a matter of time before the state is confronted with someone that says after they've grown up, just like the situation we've seen with the priests, 'I was raped at that beach,' or "'I was used in child pornography.'"
Opponents to nude bathing believe taxpayers should not have to support public nudity.
Naturists vow to stage a court challenge, if the bill becomes law.
