U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan said that if he were running, "I would have done things differently the last few weeks."

Ryan said that McCain's campaign has been knocked off stride as his Democrat rival Barack Obama has drastically outspent it. Ryan said that has allowed the Democrats to better define the issues.

Ryan said that McCain's plans for health care and the economy should have been more vigorously defended against Obama's criticism.

Ryan was mentioned earlier this year as a potential running mate for McCain and the Arizona senator has called Ryan one of the future leaders of the Republican Party.

In a string of recent polls in Wisconsin, Obama was showing a double-digit lead over McCain.

Stevens Point Journal Endorses Obama

Meanwhile, the Stevens Point Journal is endorsing Obama for president, saying that he will allow the United States to regain world respect that it recently lost.

The paper said that a mixed-race president who lived in both Hawaii and Indonesia "could go a long way toward healing some of those wounds."

The Journal said that Obama's campaign is rooted in providing hope and inspiring Americans.

The paper also said that Obama has a strong mind and he's remained steady in the face of challenges from McCain and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

While the paper said that McCain has an amazing life story and would be a capable and effective president, it said his campaign has adopted the policies, tactics and agenda of recent Republican leaders.

Green Bay Press-Gazette Endorses McCain

McCain has also picked up an important endorsement The Green Bay Press-Gazette is endorsing McCain, saying he has the experience necessary to lead the country through its economic troubles.

The state's third largest newspaper said that there is nothing automatic or routine about its decision, although the editorial published Friday says the Press-Gazette has usually picked the Republican candidate in recent decades.

While the paper praises Obama as a promising future leader, it said McCain's long record of working for change and reaching across party lines gives him the edge.

It also praises McCain for his belief that the government that governs least is best.
