Polls: Obama's Lead Increases Slightly

Female Respondents Say They Preferred Obama By More Than 20 Points

Updated: 1:15 pm CDT October 22, 2008

Less than two weeks before the election, two new polls show Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama leading his Republican rival John McCain by double digits in Wisconsin.

A new WISC-TV poll, conducted from Oct. 20 through Oct. 21, found 52 percent of people said that they'd vote for Obama while 41 percent said that they'd cast a ballot for McCain. Three percent said that they were undecided.

The women surveyed said that they preferred Obama by more than 20 percetnage points, men are about evenly split between the two candidates. About 600 likely voters from across the state were interviewed by phone for the survey.

This is only a change of 1 percentage point from the last WISC-TV poll released on Oct. 8, where Obama led McCain by 10 points.

Voters were also asked who they would trust more to handle the nation's economy. Of those surveyed, 58 percent said Barack Obama, 31 percent said John McCain and 11 percent were not sure.

Meanwhile, a Wisconsin Public Radio poll conducted by St. Norbert College Survey Center found Obama with a 13-point lead. That survey was conducted between Oct. 9 and Oct. 17.

The poll of 400 people showed Obama with 51 percent compared with 38 percent for McCain. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Sixty-one percent of respondent said that the economy is the most important issue in the election and 55 percent said Obama is better suited to handle it.

They are the fifth and sixth polls this month to show Obama with a double-digit advantage.

The two campaigns appear to have taken note of these kind of numbers. The Republican National Committee has pulled money from TV ads for McCain in the state, and the McCain campaign is cutting its ads. Obama had scheduled a rally for Thursday in Madison, but canceled it earlier this week to be with his ailing grandmother.

Obama hasn't been in Wisconsin since Oct. 1 and McCain's last appearance was Oct. 10.
