Audit: State Workers Paid $187M In Overtime

Departments Of Corrections, Health And Family Services Workers Had Most Overtime

UPDATED: 10:39 am CDT June 11, 2008

A new audit shows Wisconsin state employees were paid $187 million in overtime the past three years.

Overtime paid in 2007 was up more than 15 percent since 2005.

The Legislative Audit Bureau report released on Wednesday shows that 90 percent of the overtime paid went to employees in state agencies that have 24-hour operations or have to respond quickly to emergencies.

The state Department of Corrections and the Department of Health and Family Services led the way with the most overtime.

The audit bureau recommends that those two agencies analyze their overtime use and come up with ways to reduce overtime.
