Both Sides Of Marriage Amendment React To New Jersey Ruling

Question Will Be On November Ballot

With 12 days to Election Day, many are wondering if a ruling by the New Jersey Supreme Court will affect the outcome of Wisconsin's marriage amendment.

Supporters of the marriage amendment in Wisconsin said the same thing could happen here, and that's why voters should put new language into the Constitution.

"I think it's important that people understand what happened in New Jersey, what's already happened in Vermont, what's happened in Massachusetts, what's happened in Connecticut can happen here. It's just a matter of time," said Julaine Appling, of the group Vote Yes for Marriage.

But opponents of the marriage amendment said New Jersey and Wisconsin are different.

"It's actually completely different in Wisconsin. We have a law on the books that defines marriage as between a husband and a wife. No such law exists in New Jersey. But I don't think this is a debate about what's happening half a country away. I think this is a debate about what we're going to do here in Wisconsin and whether or not we're going to change our constitution," said Mike Tate, of the group Fair Wisconsin.

On Nov. 7, voters statewide will decide if they want to change the constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman and ban any union that's "substantially similar."
