Officials: State Unemployment Drops In May

National Rate Is 9.1 Percent

Unemployment in Wisconsin dropped slightly to 8.7 percent in May, according to state officials.

The state Department of Workforce Development said Thursday that unemployment was down from 8.8 percent in April. However, unemployment in May was 4.5 percentage points higher than in May 2008.

The national unemployment rate in May was 9.1 percent.

The state report shows that there were 33,900 more non-farm jobs between April and May, but compared to a year ago, there were 133,800 fewer jobs.
