Officials Change Tax Deadline This Year To April 17

Letter Correcting Date Is In Mail

Updated: 10:45 am CST January 30, 2007

There is good news for tax procrastinators this year: the normal tax deadline falls on a Sunday.

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue said that it's following the lead of federal tax collectors in Washington, D.C. by observing Monday, April 16, as Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia. This means the new deadline for filing taxes in Wisconsin is Tuesday, April 17, WISC-TV reported.

The state booklet that was just sent to all Wisconsinites still lists the deadline as Monday, April 16. Officials said that there's no penalty for filing ahead of time, but to set the matter straight, Wisconsin taxpayers will soon receive a follow-up letter to clarify the new state tax deadline, WISC-TV reported.

"You'll see April 16 printed in the tax booklets because we were writing and printing those booklets, and again this information was only brought to light recently," said DOR spokesperson Meredith Helgerson.

Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
