MADISON/SUN PRAIRIE-William Vasyl Nahirniak, age 90, passed away on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Agrace HospiceCare.
He was born on Dec. 8, 1922, in Bukovina, Romania where he was raised by his adoptive parents, Ilya and Alexandra Nahirniak. During WWII, William served as an Information Officer for the Ukrainian underground resistance. He and his family came to the U.S. in the 1950’s with dreams that came true because of honesty and incredible integrity. On Sept. 26, 2013, William received his U.S. citizenship. William was united in marriage to Donna Halverson on Mar. 9, 1963. He was an architect for Graven, Kenny, and Iverson architectural firm and retired from Architecture Network in 1993. Throughout his career, he worked on many prominent Madison structures. William was a faithful member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
William is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna; daughter, Laryssa (David) Kaufman; son, Ed (Teresa) Lewis; daughter, Susan (Larry) Wipperfurth; daughter, Nina (Jerry) Stocks; son Taras (Lori) Nahirniak; and daughter, Nadya (Chris) Hansen; 16 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
Funeral services for William will be held at ASSUMPTION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH, 11 N. 7th St. , Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, with Father Michael Vanderhoef presiding. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL HOME, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 with a Trisagion Service taking place at 6:30p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.
