William Richard Boyle

MADISON-William Richard Boyle, age 91, beloved husband and father, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, in Monona.

Bill was born on July 11, 1922, in Madison, the second son of William E. and Henrietta (Dodge) Boyle. He married the late Phyllis Graham on June 19, 1948, in Grace Episcopal Church, Madison.

Bill grew up across the street from Tenney Park. He graduated from East High School in 1940 and attended the UW-Madison until his enlistment in the U.S. Army in 1942. Bill served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a decorated flight commander in the Pacific Theatre. After the war he returned to the UW and was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity.

He cherished his family's deep roots in Wisconsin and was a proud life-long resident of Madison's east side. Bill loved to travel and knew by memory the roadways of Wisconsin. A ride around the city, through the countryside, to the Lake House or down to Florida are all fond memories for his children. When he gave up driving, his children would take him on a ride. Bill worked for Oscar Mayer for over 30 years and served as Program Manager for the National Meat Canners Association. When he retired in 1983 he became active in the Oscar Mayer Retirees' organization. He volunteered as a tax consultant for the elderly and he and Phyllis volunteered with Meals on Wheels.

Bill was happy to have donated over 12 gallons of blood to the Red Cross during his life, and for many years served the Grace Episcopal Church community as a Lay Reader.

Bill was a consummate handyman and problem solver. If it broke, he could fix it. He was both frugal and generous. Bill was a golfer, boater, sailor, ice skater, skier and a cook. He was a passionate, life-long Badgers fan (On Wisconsin!) and Green Bay Packers fan. He and Phyllis traveled the world together, embracing the excitement of seeing new places and meeting new people. They loved spending part of every winter in Destin, Fla. Bill was loyal to his family and friends, and was especially attentive to his parents and his elderly aunts and uncles. He believed in and practiced self-reliance.

Bill is survived by his children, Richard (Cindy) Boyle of Middleton, Lynn (Gordon) Lonsdale of Highland, Utah, Steven (Sherry) Boyle of Madison and Barbara Kopenski of Oregon; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Tom (Marilyn) Boyle of Madison; and 10 nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis; his older brother, John S. Boyle; and his son-in-law, Richard Kopenski.

A private family service was held. Later this summer the family will host a Celebration of Bill's Life with family and friends. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Our family would like to express our immeasurable gratitude to the staff of Heritage Assisted Living Monona and Agrace HospiceCare for the deeply compassionate care you each gave to Dad.
