Madison - Violet L. Hovland, age 93, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014 at St. Mary's Care Center.

She was born on January 12, 1921 to Peter and Ella (Brahs) Lohr in Hartford, Wisconsin.

After graduating from Prairie du Sac High School in 1938, Violet went on to receive a BA in Education from UW - Whitewater in 1942. Violet was united in marriage to Alvin J. Hovland on June 10, 1944 in Prairie du Sac. She taught at various high schools in New Diggings, Menomonie, Ripon, Neptune Township (Asbury Park, N.J.), Edgerton, Verona, Middleton, and Madison West from 1965 until she retired in 1986.

Violet was a member of Midvale Community Lutheran Church since November 1954, a member of Hill Farm Swim Club from 1959-2008, a member of Madison Area Retired Teacher Association since 1986, a 50 year member of the White Shrine, and a member of the Madison Civics Club. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross and was a Madison School Recreation Playground leader in the 1950's. The organizations Violet belonged to include the American Red Cross Legacy Foundation - Badger Chapter, the Foundation for Madison Public Schools, The Elvehjem Museum of Arts Foundation, the Chazen Museum, the University of Wisconsin Foundation, the Wisconsin Retired Educators Foundation, and the Madison Area Retired Teachers Association.

Violet is survived by her husband, Alvin; daughter, Cynthia H. (Steve) Julius; and grandchildren, Kristi (Gino) Forcucci and Brad (fiancé, Kayla Briehl) Julius. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Carroll F. "Pete" Lohr.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at MIDVALE COMMUNITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3229 Tokay Blvd., Madison with Pastor Katie Baardseth presiding. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
