Val M. Halverson, age 103, died quietly on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013. She was born on July 23, 1909, in Rio, the fourth of five daughters of Oscar and Louise Lien. Val grew up in a musical family. For several years, she was the second soprano in the Lien sister's trio, which performed for various area gatherings and over WIBA. After high school and County Normal School, she taught for three years in area schools before returning to college, graduating from the UW-Milwaukee. She taught for eight more years, the last five in Monroe. After her teaching career, she became an administrator in a real estate and insurance office in Madison, an assistant librarian in the Legislative Reference Bureau in the state capital, and finally, a position with the State Department of Transportation. In 1937, she married Gerry Monroe Halverson, an engineer for Standard Oil of Indiana whose transfers brought them to various cities throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. She was a very active volunteer before her marriage having served the Red Cross, UW Hospital and Clinic, and the Laubach Literacy Council. After marriage, she joined the Woman's Club in Neillsville, and continued her membership throughout the years; she was active in ITC, an International Communications Organization, where she also served in all offices, the Madison Civic Club, the Elks Club Auxiliary, the Shrine Widows organization, and the Sons of Norway. In the 1940's, she organized and directed children's choirs in her churches while living in Sparta, Green Bay, and Elmhurst, Ill., in addition to singing in the adult choir. After moving back to Madison in 1961, she and her family joined, and were active members in the Midvale Community Lutheran Church for more than 20 years. After her husband passed away in 1984, she transferred her membership to Bethel Lutheran Church where three of her sisters were then members. Mayor Paul Soglin presented Val with a certificate for her service to Madison on her 102nd birthday.
Val is survived by two sons, James T. (Sharon) Halverson of Florida and Geoffrey M. (Carol) Halverson of Ohio; four grandchildren, Tom (Jennifer) Halverson of Minnesota, Andrea Halverson Harper (Ian) of McLean, Va., Eric Halverson of Michigan, and Kirsten Halverson of California; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley, Hannah, and John Halverson of Minnesota, Isabelle, Madison, and Cameron and Graham Harper of Virginia.; and one of her five sisters, Fran Anderson of Madison. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerry; three sisters, Myrtle Fosmark, Evelyn Kivela, and Eunice Strand.
Funeral services will be held at OAKWOOD VILLAGE CHAPEL, 6201 Mineral Point Rd., at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, 2012, with the Rev. Martha Nack presiding. Visitation will take place at Oakwood Village Chapel from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Mon. A private burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
