COTTAGE GROVE-Theron Jesse Uphoff, age 95, lifelong resident of Cottage Grove, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at home.

He was born on Feb. 13, 1918, to Jesse and Edith (Smith) Uphoff. Theron graduated from Deerfield High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in the 32nd Division Company G in the South Pacific from 1940 until 1945. Shortly after returning from service, he began his career as a rural mail carrier in Cottage Grove. Theron continued in this position until his retirement after 33 years. He married Janice Sandmire on Dec. 17, 1949, in Cottage Grove and enjoyed 63 years of loving marriage. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Masons, Order of the Eastern Star, and Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Theron enjoyed hunting and fishing, making frequent trips to Canada and Wyoming for this purpose. He also enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and traveling which included trips and cruises to Alaska, Panama, the Caribbean and Hawaii. Theron was a racing enthusiast and followed his son, Delmar’s progression from go-karts to motorcycles and snowmobile races. He especially loved to watch the deer, turkeys, birds, and other wild life that roamed around his home on top of Flynn Hill.

Theron is survived by his wife, Janice; daughter, Margo Parisi of Tampa, Fla.; son-in-law, Alex Weinberger; step-grandchildren, Terri Weinberger of Shorewood, Marie Tucker of Clermont, Fla., Ted Weinberger of Nokomis, Fla., and Sara Heechen of Menomonee Falls; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Edith Uphoff; sister, LaWana Notstad; and son, Delmar J. Uphoff.

Funeral services will be held at BRYN MAWR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 229 N. Main St., Cottage Grove, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Theron’s name to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove, Agrace HospiceCare of Madison, or Stoughton Hospital Home Health Trusted Hands of Stoughton.
