Steve was born September 1, 1949 in Mauston, Wisconsin the son of Irland B. and Mary Jane (Dillon) Hopper. He graduated from Mauston High School in 1968 and the University of Wisconsin – Platteville in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree with an Agricultural Engineering major and an Agriculture Technology minor. Steve had a passion for trains. He enjoyed photographing them and on occasion he would spend hours waiting in remote areas for a train to pass so he could get the perfect shot. He also had a large model train collection, with trains from different eras. Also special to him was scuba diving and fishing along with the designing and building of Muskie lures. Steve was a man of many talents and had a lot of interests at which he always succeeded. Every time a train blows its whistle and rumbles steadfast down the tracks, we will always remember Steve; his zest for life and the unwillingness to ever give up.
Steve is survived by a sister, Beth Hopper Wafle (T.J. Schwedrsky); brother, Thomas Hopper; nieces, Danielle, Tara Jo, Sara Elizabeth and Mary Jane; nephew, Christopher; great niece, Kali Jo; and great nephews, Luke and Burke. He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Jon Wafle and dear friend, Russ Schwedrsky.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations to St. Patrick’s School would be appreciated.
