Robert Vernon Wells, age 84, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, July 24, 2013.
He was born in Brodhead on April 26, 1929, the son of the late George and Bernice (Poppe) Wells. Bob grew up in the Footville area and graduated from Orfordville High School in 1946. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed aboard the USS PHILIPPINE SEA, an aircraft carrier. In 1947 the ship was assigned to the Admiral Byrd Expedition to the South Pole.
After discharge in 1948, Bob tried numerous jobs, looking to find the best job suited for himself. He found selling was his field and joined Prudential Insurance as an agent in 1955. In 1959 he was promoted to management, serving in the offices of Beloit, Janesville, and Watertown. In 1968 he and his wife, Geri, had a desire to work for themselves and purchased the Cutter Inn tavern in Roxbury. They sold it in 1975 and then purchased Romie's Dinnette in Sauk City, converting it into a small supper club, the Kabar Inn. In 1977 the Kabar Inn was sold and they started Bob's Outlet in Sauk City. Over the years the business was gradually converted to a new furniture store, which is now run by his son, Shaun, and his wife, Lori. Bob retired in 2002. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and a good card game. His fantasy island was the Dunes Casino in Las Vegas, to which he made many trips. Bob's desire was to leave as quietly as he entered.
He is survived by five sons, Gene, Guy (Moe), Mark (Terri), Brad (Shelly) and Shaun (Lori); eight grandchildren, Beth (Jeff), Nick (Lindsey), Travis, Lexi, Jake, Emily, Grace and Caslin; a great-granddaughter, Liberty; and a great-grandson, Noah. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geri; a brother, George; a sister, Joyce; and a grandson, Josh.
Private, family graveside services were held at the Sauk City Cemetery.
