MCFARLAND/MONONA-Robert G. Dent, of McFarland, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2013.

He was born on June 4, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., the eldest son of Herbert G. and Kathryn F. Dent. Bob was a graduate of Senn High School and Wright Junior College in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an artillery forward observer with the 38th Field Artillery Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Division in Europe. Bob participated in five major campaigns including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in September of 1944. After the war, he returned to Chicago and attended Northwestern University where he received his accounting degree in 1947. Bob married Jean Dingle on Feb. 15, 1947. He worked for Montgomery Ward and Company for 2-1/2 years before joining Oscar Mayer and Company in their Chicago office in the accounting department. In October of 1949, he was transferred to the Madison office of Oscar Mayer. He retired from Oscar Mayer in 1982 after nearly 33 years of service. Bob was a long-time member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where he sang in the choir and over the years, served in various parish offices including Treasurer and as a member of the Vestry. He was a member of the Madison Symphony Chorus for many years and was active in Olbrich Gardens where he served on the Board of Directors for six years. He was also on the Board of the Ecumenical Housing Corporation and he served on several City of Monona commissions as a citizen volunteer. Bob and his wife, Jean, loved to travel ad enjoyed numerous trips abroad.

Bob is survived by his wife, Jean; their five children, John (Pat) of Foxboro, Mass., Katherine Papanicholas (Vaughn) of Batavia, Ill., James (Marsha) Chapin, S.C., Margery of Rochester, Minn., and Barbara Meyers (Phil) of Edgerton; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, William.

A Memorial service will be held at ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 4011 Major Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2013. Inurnment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church or to Olbrich Gardens.
