MONONA-Richard G. “Dick” St. John, age 82, of Monona, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, following a brief illness.
He was born on Oct. 4, 1931, in Brodhead, the son of Edward O. St. John and Pearl I. (Wicheldt) St. John. Dick graduated from Madison East High School in 1950, and served in the U.S. Army in Korea for 16 months with the 378th Combat Engineer Battalion.
He was married to the former, Mary Ann Marking for 40 years.
Dick worked for 41 years as a meat cutter. He was a manager and supervisor with National Food Stores. He was also meat manager at Kohl’s Markets in Madison and spent 25 years with Jacobson’s Meats and Deli, mainly on Monona Drive. Dick enjoyed bowling, golfing, and card-playing with family and friends.
After retiring, he liked woodworking, making bird houses, and hand-painting farm scenes on old saws. Dick especially liked making keepsakes for his grandchildren. He enjoyed yard work and for fun, occasional trips to the horse or dog tracks and casinos.
Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; sons, Gary (Barbara) St. John of Santa Rosa, Calif. and David (Barbara) St. John of Madison; step-daughters, Connie (Alan) Jonett of Marshfield and Terry Miller of Green Bay; step-son, Kenny (Tammy) Bahl of Marshall; grandchildren, Jeff, Christi, Chelsea, Lindsey, Matt, Nate, Chad, Devon, Lucius, Zach, Love, Alexis, Hunter, and Claire; great-grandchildren, Colin, Olivia, Abby, Emma, Charlie, Laney, and Sam; sister, Vicki Liebetrau; and niece, Rhonda (Geron) Thompson, and her children, Casey and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-daughter, Kim Bahl; brothers-in-law, Mike Marking and Darcy Hauge; and sister-in-law, Georgian Miller.
Funeral services for Dick will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013. Burial with military honors will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, as well as from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday.
