Sioux Falls, SD/Madison, WI - Dick Vaughan entered this world on March 23, 1924 in Watertown, SD, just hours before the birth of his wife-to-be, Betty, who was born on a nearby farm and delivered by the same doctor. His journey on this earth ended on January 30, 2014, when he reunited with Betty, who died in 2002.
Some of Dick’s proudest accomplishments were his three and a half years of military service in the Signal Corps during WWII; his 55 years of marriage to the woman he adored; his legacy of two daughters, two granddaughters, and two great grandchildren; his decades of employment with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and membership in the Telephone Pioneers; and his volunteer service as a surrogate grandfather to children at First Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls, where he and Betty were active members.
Dick had 89 happy and fulfilling years of life, all but the last two as a resident of South Dakota. He relocated to Wisconsin in 2012 to be closer to family, who were thrilled to have him near.
Family and friends are bound in the love and care that Dick and Betty created. They maintained a welcoming home, always with an assortment of beloved furry pets, a place where friends and neighbors loved to gather for conversation, laughter, and spirited games of Ping-Pong. He gave his daughters the gift of being a real father, of always being there and loving them.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and his sister, Betty Coykendall. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Mary Fiore (Bill) and Nancy Vaughan (Stephen Canges); granddaughters, Kristin Fiore (Cindy Byczek) and Jenny Fiore (Blaine Jensen); and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Beckett.
A private inurnment will be held in the spring at Hurley Cemetery in Hurley, South Dakota.
The family wishes to thank his Agrace hospice team – Lesly, Lish, Jason, Tara, Stephanie, and the numerous support staff who provided the care that enabled him to remain in his home.
