Nancy Kay Squires Stapelmann, age 60, of Madison, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was born on July 26, 1953, in Madison, to Robin and Delores (Parks) Squires Sr.

Nancy is survived by Paul Volkmann, her partner in crime of 11 years; children, Heather Stapelmann, Victor Stapelmann (Jennifer Hansen), and Rebecca (Christopher) Breunig, also including Kelly West and Alex Volkmann; grandchildren, Tedrin, Anthony, Andrew and Alayna West, Lucas and Elise Breunig, and Colton Lambert; her siblings, Ann (Steve) Grob, Robin (Marie) Squires Jr., Bruce (Kim) Squires, and Kathy (Bryan) Chapin; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry J. Stapelmann; father, Robin C. Squires Sr.; mother, Delores E. Squires; and mother-in-law Sadie Stapelmann Schultz.
She attended Lapham Elementary, Gomphers Middle, and graduated Madison East High School in 1971. Nancy led a very fulfilling and active life with her family and friends. Some of her favorite things to do included spending time with her grandchildren, getting together at family functions, and playing games. She loved going on motorcycle rides with Paul and their friends. Nancy was a Life Member with the Ladies Auxiliary VFW 8483.
Once diagnosed with pancreas cancer in June 2011, Nancy never gave up. She never complained and maintained a brave and cheerful outlook of an optimistic future, even through countless radiation and chemotherapy treatments, hospitalizations and pain. She was cancer free for two years. Nancy was able to stay at home until the end with the continued help from her three children, Paul and friends.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Winslow, Dr. Mulkerin and the staff at UW Hospital Oncology, along with the staff at Agrace HospiceCare for the excellent care they provided for our mother in her final time. She will be donating her body to the UW Madison School of Medicine & Public Health for educational purposes.
