Maurice “Jack” Short Jr.
Flag Veteran/Belleville, WI - Maurice “Jack” Short Jr., age 86, long-time resident of Belleville passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at home with his family and caregivers surrounding him.
He was born on December 11, 1926, in rural Oregon, Wisconsin, to Maurice and Gladys (Rowlands) Short. Jack graduated from Belleville High School in 1944, and was drafted into the Army serving in WWII (Philippines) initially in the infantry before being promoted to the adjutant general corps. He was again called to active duty again in 1949 to serve during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at Fort McCoy. On November 6, 1948 he was united in marriage to Phyllis (Denton) Short.
Jack worked at Pet Milk until he was asked operate a dairy delivery business delivering the Pet Milk, Fairmont, and Sealtest brands to homes, businesses, and schools. Jack and Phyllis operated the delivery business for 20 years. While also operating the dairy delivery business, Jack attended MATC to become an electrician which led to the founding of Short Electric which they operated for 56 years.
Jack was very active in the community as a member of the Belleville Volunteer Fire Dept for 56 and a half years, member of over 60 years and Past Commander of the Duppler-Smith American Legion Post 460, Past President of the Belleville Community Club, Belleville Kiwanis Club, member and board member at Grace United Methodist Church, and a trustee on the Belleville Village Board.
Jack was a school bus driver for the Belleville School district for 34 years, being able to enjoy driving two generations of families to school daily. Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports (especially Packer and Badger football), and travelling with their camper. Jack was able to travel to Washington DC last year on the Badger Honor Flight.
Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years Phyllis (Denton) Short, son Gene (Julie Bigler), daughter Janie (Duane) Froehlich, grandchildren Brian (Katharine) Froehlich and Heather (Sean) Brittain, sister-in-law Edna Short, brothers-in-law Harry Welch and Kenneth Nelson, Troy Brice, and many nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Robert, Harley and Richard; sisters Cressie Welch and Doris Nelson, and sister-in-law Mary Short.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home, 109 Greenway Cross, Belleville, WI with the Rev. Edwin Vargas and Rev. Kenneth Klink officiating with burial in Sunset Memory Gardens, Madison, WI.
Relatives and friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home in Belleville.
