MADISON-Mary Margaret Burton, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, after 65 years of a rich and rewarding life.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1948, in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of Robert E. and Alice C. (Murphy) Mahoney. Mary Margaret attended Sacred Heart Catholic School from grade school through high school. She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1970, and her master’s degree in library science in 1971, both from the University of Iowa.

Mary Margaret married Richard Burton on Oct. 2, 1971, in Boone, Iowa. They lived in Iowa City, Iowa, for six years, where she was a reference librarian at the Iowa City Public Library. They moved to Madison in 1977.

Mary Margaret served as the first librarian for the Cambridge Public Library until 1980. She was a library assistant at Whitehorse Middle School from 1992 until 1999. She became a reference librarian at the Pinney Branch Library in 2000, and a branch supervisor of Pinney, Hawthorne and Monroe Street branches in 2008. Mary Margaret retired in January 2013. Her volunteer work includes President of Friends of Pinney Branch Library, PTA president of Kennedy Elementary School and board member of Whitehorse Middle School. Mary Margaret was also a longtime member of the Madison Area Chapter of the EGA.

Mary Margaret is survived by her husband, Richard; son, Paul (Abbey); daughter, Sarah; brothers, Tim (Judy) Mahoney of Omaha, Neb., Mike (Peggy) Mahoney of Boone, Iowa, and Pat (Shawn) Mahoney of Olathe, Kan.; sisters-in-law, Virginia (Jim) Melroy and Cecile (Ron) Owings, both of Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren, Joseph, Max, and Miriam Burton; special cousin, Judy Winistorfer; special friend, Ruth Boyle; German brother, Norbert (Hermine) Nedopil of Munich, Germany; many nieces and nephews; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; uncles, Jim, John, Bill, and Tom; aunt, Mary; and parents-in-law, William Lee and Elsie Burton.

Funeral services will be held at DOOR CREEK CHURCH, 6602 Dominion Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, with the Rev. Cal Steiner presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Madison Public Library-Pinney Branch, Pinney Endowment Fund, Madison Public Library Foundation, Literacy Network, or Second Harvest Food Bank. The family wishes to thank Dr. James Huen and the staff of Dean Clinic’s Oncology Department, as well as the staff of Agrace HospiceCare for their support and compassion during her long illness.
