Artist, wife, and mother Marian Theresa Hurkman, age 91, of Janesville, died Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Lakeland Health Care Center, Elkhorn. She was born in Chicago, IL, on Aug. 11, 1922, the daughter of Emil and Anna (Oechiner) Meyer. Marian graduated from Lucy Flower High School in Chicago, and enjoyed a brief clerical career before marrying William Hurkman on June 29, 1946, in Wadsworth, WI. He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 2011. Marian lived all over the United States, first moving from place to place while raising a family as a naval spouse, and later living in California for a time, before finally settling in Janesville, WI. She was a member of St. William Catholic Church in Janesville, and of the Franciscan Third Order in Lake Geneva. An avid painter who mastered the Norwegian art of Rosemaling, Marian's work graces many homes around the United States.
She is survived by 6 children: William (Marion) Hurkman, Jr. of Martinez, CA, Joanne (Jerry) Bohren of Appleton, David (Sue) Hurkman of Fontana, Margaret (Bart Theiler) Hurkman of Tanglewood, CA, Mark (Jane) Hurkman of Lake Geneva, WI, and Alexis (Kaylynn Raschke) Hurkman of St. Paul, MN; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Irvin Meyer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014, at ST. WILLIAM CATHOLIC CHURCH with Fr. John Auby officiating. Visitation will take place on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of Mass at ST. WILLIAM'S. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rock County Humane Society.
