Marcia Schaeve

Verona Marcia Schaeve (Dial), age 66, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on June 29, 2013 at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. Marci was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2009 and it was found to have metastasized to her liver in October 2011.

Marci was born January 17, 1947 to Harold and Ruth (Hamburg) Dial in Las Vegas, New Mexico. She graduated in 1965 from Brookfield East High School, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. Marci attended UW-Madison, graduating with a B.S. in medical technology. She began her career with the UW Hospital as a medical technologist and enjoyed a 32-year career working in laboratories in the field of blood chemistry. During her career, she headed the proficiency testing program at the Clinical Chemistry Section of the Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene and taught at UW-Madison.

Marci met her husband, Joe, in 1972 while playing in an adult recreation volleyball league at Randall Elementary School in Madison. Marci and Joe were married on August 7, 1976 at St. Paul's Catholic Chapel in Madison. The couple has two sons, Mark (Chicago) and Pete (Verona). Marci and Joe were, and always will be, soul mates. Marci found great peace and strength in her Catholic faith. Her favorite thing to do was to watch her sons play sports and then later in life do crossword and jigsaw puzzles with them. She also enjoyed reading novels, gardening and taking trips to Colorado to see her parents and siblings. An accomplished snow skier, she skied the European Alps and the U.S. and Canadian Rockies. She was a great cook and an invaluable bargain-hunter. She also loved horses.

Marci is survived by her husband and sons, as well as her siblings Tana Dial, Jim Dial, Roberta Dial and Will (Michelle) Dial of Colorado and Krista Kennedy (Dial) of Arizona and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles and Aunt Emma.

She found comfort and compassion in her Bible study group, her Instant Sisters group at Gilda's Club and countless other friends who offered their prayers and support over the past few years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5313 Flad Avenue, Madison. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 220 Enterprise Drive, Verona, and again on Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. A private burial will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

Marci and her family are forever grateful to Roy Kim, M.D. and the talented, caring and compassionate staff at Agrace HospiceCare. In lieu of flowers, kindly direct memorial gifts in Marci's name to the Western Wisconsin Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
