Lois Elizabeth Ridley died on January 18, 2014 at Attic Angel Place in Madison WI.
Lois was born in Detroit, MI in 1921, the only child of Lela and Edward Gordon. Educated in public schools in Detroit, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in 1943 in dietetics and completed an internship at the University of Chicago Hospital. She then worked in Chicago for the United States Army to develop nutritional products for our troops. It was there she met Theodore Ridley; marriage followed in 1948 and sons in 1950 and 1953. The family settled in the Detroit area; Lois resumed her dietetic career at a Veterans Administration Hospital in the late 1960s for some 20 years.
Lois and Ted valued learning and read across a wide spectrum, frequently related to their worldwide travel. Favorite TV shows were BBC dramas and, in an earlier era, the Flintstones.
After retirement, Lois and Ted relocated to Muskegon, MI rejoining a group of couples from their newlywed days at Central United Methodist Church, friendships that endured for 60 years. Lois provided much support to Ted during his lengthy disability until his death in 2007; they moved to Madison in 2006. She led an active life in Madison, traveling to Europe several times and around the US with Susan and Gordon, her daughter-in-law and son.
Lois was humble yet strong and used a clever turn of phrase to make a point or make a joke. She collected Toby mugs (Royal Daulton English china) throughout her life and never was far away from a crossword puzzle or a British mystery. A pianist in her early years, Lois attended many classical music concerts in Muskegon and Madison. She was a member of the AAUW, the PEO and CUMC.
Lois Ridley is survived by her sons Paul (Joan) of Dallas TX and Gordon (Susan) of Madison WI, and grandchildren Megan Ridley-Kaye (Josh) of New York City and Andrew Ridley of Madison and also by her dear friends Shirley and Dean Chapman of Muskegon and Dale Burgess of Ann Arbor.
A memorial service will be held at CUMC at a later date.
