Lawrence P. Whalen

JANESVILLE--Lawrence P. "Larry" Whalen, age 83, of Janesville, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Rock Haven. He was born in New York City, NY, on Sept. 22, 1929, the son of James and Catherine (Roach) Whalen and was a graduate of Fordham University. Larry served in the US Army infantry during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart Recipient. He married Helen E. Brandt on June 10, 1956, in Demerest, NJ. Larry began working for Equitable Insurance Company until forming his own business, Sunshine Painting. They moved to Janesville in 1978, and he spent time working at American Feed and Livestock and also Woodmans Food Market. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and enjoyed fly fishing, gardening, reading and watching baseball, especially the New York Mets.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; 2 daughters, Christine Whalen of Bellvue, CO, and Betsy (Glenn) McMillan of Lake Geneva; 5 grandchildren: Sarah, Cate, Cassidy, Trevor, and Shannon; 4 siblings: Margaret (Eamon) Kelly of New Orleans, LA, Patsy (John) O'Hara of Flushing, NY, John (Lois) Whalen of Lackawaxen, PA, and Sr. Katie Whalen of Baltimore, MD; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Whalen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Janesville, with Fr. James Kuhn officiating. Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass at ST. PATRICK'S. Memorials may be made to ECHO. The family is being assisted by SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY is assisting the family with arrangements.
