MADISON-Lawrence “Toby” Elmer Tyler, age 91, of Madison, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013, while vacationing in Tony, WI.
He was born on April 17, 1922, in Bagley, the son of Muriel and Lena (Meng) Tyler. Toby married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Sedlmayr, and they celebrated 72 years of marriage together. He was a mess sergeant in the CCC Camp after high school. Toby was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country on the front lines in World War II. After the war, he started an auto repair shop in Colorado; he then moved back to Wisconsin and worked as a mechanic.
For 25 years, Toby worked at the Madison City Garage, where he was supervisor. For all of his life he worked hard and sometimes even at two jobs. In high school, he was scouted for a major league baseball team, but circumstances prevented him from attending the tryouts. Toby loved and played baseball for many years and later in life played softball and dart ball. He started golfing as a senior and received many accolades and even a hole-in-one to go along with the many trophies he won. Toby enjoyed hunting and fishing with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was an active member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church throughout his life.
His legacy that he left to the world is that of a wonderful loving man, with a great work ethic, who always put his family first, gave a helping hand when needed, and lived his faith and love on a daily basis. Though we all miss him greatly, we are comforted that he is at rest in heaven with his savior Jesus and that we will see him again.
Toby is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters, Lois (Roland) Reinholtz, Kay Jimenez, and Donna Akers; son, Lawrence S. (Aline) Tyler; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Trudie Konicek; and brother-in-law, Spencer (Nona Hagel) Sedlmayr. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Muriel; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Funeral services will be held at HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2670 Milwaukee St., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, with the Rev. Bernt Tweit presiding. Burial will be at Bagley Cemetery.
