Kenneth A. Sheldon, 84, of Platteville, WI died on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Southwest Health Center, Platteville, after a brief illness.
Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Pastor Mike Majeski will officiate. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Platteville, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday May 28, 2013 or from 12:00 p.m. (Noon) until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Kenneth was born on March 31, 1929 the son of Harrison and Clara (Reisen) Sheldon in Elk Grove Twp., Lafayette County, WI. Ken grew up on farms in Lafayette and Grant counties, where his father worked as a farm laborer until his death, when Ken was ten years old. His mother, older brothers, and sisters then moved the family to Platteville. Ken worked for several farms, then Eastman Cartwright Lumber Co and finally in 1966 for UW Platteville on the Buildings and Grounds Crew until his retirement in 1989. Ken served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 as a PFC in Japan and Korea. He was a lifetime member of the Platteville Post 5274 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was united in marriage to Neta Ward on October 18, 1950 in Lancaster, WI. Kenny was well liked by everyone and always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, bowling, and playing euchre. He also loved his wife’s homemade cinnamon rolls and apple pies.
He is survived by his wife, Neta; children, Alan (Victoria) Sheldon of Madison; Janet Popp of Shullsburg; Gail (David) Arling of Cuba City; and Karla Goodney of Platteville; six grandchildren, Brian (Teri) Sheldon of Cross Plains; Jennifer (Jay) Berendes of Shullsburg; Brandon Popp of Cuba City; Kelly (Joshua) Altfillisch of Scales Mound, IL; Megan and Matthew Goodney of Platteville; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jay Berendes Jr., and Mckenna Altfillisch; one brother, Anson Sheldon of Livingston; two sisters, Ruth Dull of Platteville and Dorothy Schambow of Livingston. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harry and Donald; and sister, Ethleen Sheldon.
