Madison -- John H. Cloutier III passed away August 6 from ALS often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," at Agrace HospiceCare in Madison.
Born June 16, 1934 in Oshkosh to John Cloutier II and Edna Adèle Cloutier, the family moved to Madison soon after. An accomplished athlete, John attended Central High School and excelled at football, basketball, track and baseball. He served in the Marines during the Korean War and returned to Madison to be accepted into the Madison Police Department from 1957 – 1990. He was promoted to Detective Supervisor and focused his career within the homicide department.
Upon retirement in 1990 he took on his most challenging job in life. Golf. Some would say he was a passionate player and the rest would run in the opposite direction of his thundering drive. Thank goodness his short game humbled him and he made some of his closest and cherished friends on and off the course. A huge thank you to his "Golf & Coffee Buddies": Ted Mell, Ray Riley, Jim Dawson, Larry Sliffe and other treasured friends who visited throughout his illness. When he wasn't up to the drive for morning coffee, they brought the group to him.
John had the fortune to marry the love of his life, Carol Hubanks, October 23, 1960. He fell in love after viewing an award winning portrait she modeled for and that was positioned in the front window of a photographer's store on State Street, which happened to be his "beat" as a patrol officer in his beginning years on the police force. Naturally, he tracked her down and proceeded to do "surveillance" of her daily routine. They were introduced through mutual friends on a double date and he shamelessly used his 2 corvettes to dazzle her down the aisle. They shared 53 years of a deep love and commitment to family.
John & Carol want to say thank you and I love you to their family, including his nephews and nieces and friends. Not just for the support and love during his illness but for a lifetime of love and support. So much laughter, so many wonderful conversations, trips and adventures. To Dr. Marcus Santana – "Thanks! From Superman".
John is survived by his love, Carol Cloutier, his son John H. Cloutier IV (Jeanne) with whom he raced sailboats for over 20 years on Lake Mendota and was smart enough to recognize his son's talent and tenacity for being a natural Captain at the age of 12 and took orders with pride. Daughter, Stephanie (Scott) Sabo, who hid under the bed so she didn't have to sail but he celebrated her love of dance and flower child ways. No father could be more adored or treasured than this man. Nobody loves you like we do, Daddy.
The icing on John's life are his 4 grandchildren; Mitchell John (Rose), Monica and Dustin Cloutier and John Cloutier (JC) Sabo. They celebrate his sense of humor, that he was always available to talk and his dedication to attending as many music, school, and athletic events as possible.
John's visitation and celebration of life service will be Tuesday, August 12 at Holy Wisdom Monastery. Visitation from 11am – 1pm, service at 1pm with a light lunch to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Holy Wisdom Monastery or Agrace HospiceCare of Madison.
