COTTAGE GROVE-Janice Meredith Uphoff passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, with her family by her side at Agrace HospiceCare after a short illness.

She was born on March 10, 1927 in Richland Center, the daughter of Carl “Glen” and Lois “Bernadine” (Patch) Sandmire. When she was a teenager the family moved to Cottage Grove where Janice spent the rest of her life. She graduated from Madison East High School in 1944, and the U.W. Madison in 1948, with a degree in Education. Janice began her teaching career at Kaukauna schools and then taught Jr. High English at Sun Prairie schools for 26 years before retiring in 1989.

On Dec. 17, 1949, she married the love of her life, Theron Uphoff, with whom she enjoyed 63 years of marriage before his death on May 16, 2013. They had two children, Margo Lee and Delmar Jay.

Janice was an active member of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church for over 70 years, serving on many of their committees over the years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxillary, Order of the Eastern Star and the Cottage Grove Snowmobile Association. Janice enjoyed gardening and watching the deer and other wildlife roaming around their yard, playing bridge and other card games, watching sports, particularly NASCAR races; dancing, traveling and senior swim classes. Family was important to her and she looked forward to family visits and trips to Florida to see her daughter and family. She was an avid fan of her son Delmar’s racing career which included go-karts, motorcycles and snowmobiles. She and Theron were proud to have completed MATC computer classes in their senior years.

Janice is survived by her daughter, Margo Parisi and husband Alex Weinberger of Tampa Fla.; step-grandchildren, Terri Weinberger of Shorewood, Marie (Ted) Tucker of Clermont, Fla., Ted (Annette) Weinberger of Nakomis, Fla., and Sara (Ken) Heeschen of Menomonee Falls; four step-great-grandchildren, Alexander and Matthew Weinberger and Pierce and Mya Heeschen; brothers, Cameron “Ty” Sandmire of North Freedom, Dr. Herbert (Crystal) Sandmire of Green Bay and Lyle “LaVaugn” Sandmire of Madison; sister, Janet Frost of Granite City, Ill.; sister-in-law, Valerie (Art) Sandmire of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Theron; son, Delmar; brothers, James and Auta “Art” Sandmire; sisters, Irvine “Cardell” Tadder and Corinne Seago; sisters-in-law, LaWana Notstad, Joan Sandmire and Audrey Sandmire; brothers-in-law, Wilna Seago, Bernard Tadder and Allen Notstad.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at BRYN MAWR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 229 N. Main Street, Cottage Grove, at 11 a.m. on Wedesday, Jan. 15, 2014. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, Agrace HospiceCare of Madison, or Stoughton Hospital Home Health Trusted Hands Program.
