MADISON-Gloria S. Layman of Madison, passed away early Saturday Morning October 26th at Hebron Nursing Home, a part of Oakwood's retirement facility.
She was the only child of Harold and Emma Sorensen, and grew up in the Chicago area. Gloria graduated from Carthage College in 1952, and married Ralph (Dick) Layman shortly after. Gloria worked in retailing at Spiegles catalogue and Marshall Fields.
Dick was Drafted and sent to France where their son Ralph was born. Three years later their daughter Laurel was born in Sparta, Wisconsin. Gloria and Dick co-published college directories in newspaper format from 1962 until 1998. Dick and Gloria started dating 67 years ago, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last November.
She served one year as president of Madison's Home Economics Association and she also served as president of the University West End Club, a club affiliated with the University of Wisconsin. Gloria enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, sewing, and watching her favorite teams, Badgers, Packers, and the New York Yankees.
Gloria is survived by her husband Ralph (Dick) Layman Sr., her son Ralph Jr. (Jasbeena), and her daughter Laurel Butler, and her seven grandchildren; Katherine, Michelle, Elizabeth, Joe, Robert, Emily, and Karina. She is also survived by Lori (Wheeler) Williams who has been like a daughter to Gloria.
Gloria was especially fond of and close to her cousins, aunts, uncles, and their spouses. She truly appreciated the love and friendship of family and friends.
