CROSS PLAINS-Gertrude "Gertie" Ripp, age 92, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Feb. 15, 1920, in Salem, Ore., the daughter of Michael and Natalia (Grabowski) Schwarz. In 1926, her family moved from Oregon to Mazomanie. Much of her time was spent helping her family, but Gertie truly enjoyed attending dances, where she met the love of her life. After waiting four long years for her love to return from war, Gertrude married Michael J. Ripp on Feb. 20, 1946. Together, they purchased a farm in Cross Plains and they shared 13 children, 33 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Gertie's passions included farming, family and her faith. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, doing "fancy work", playing cards, and cracking hickory nuts. Her favorite past-time was spending time with her grandkids.
Gertrude is survived by her children, Jim (Pam) Ripp of Henderson, Nev., Jerry (Mary Jo) Ripp of Sheridan, Ore., Allen Ripp of Blue Mounds, Neil (Joni) Ripp of Mineral Point, Nancy Ripp of Madison, Jeannie (Andy) Pendl of Madison, Linda (Roger) Hlavacka of Cross Plains, Annette (Bryan) Palchik of Mt. Horeb, and Lora (Mike) Doherty of Cross Plains; sisters, Mary Anne Wilhelm of Mazomanie and Lou Jamieson of Verona; brother, Louis Schwarz of Sauk City; 33 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; three daughters, Cecelia Ripp, Kathy Hendrickson, and Mary Jane Nosko; son, Vern Ripp; daughter-in-law, Sandy Ripp; her parents; sisters, Adeline, Frances, and Genevieve; brothers, Ed, Joe, and Anthony.
