Gertrude Bell, age 89, of Janesville, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison. She was born in Harmony Township on Oct. 22, 1924, the daughter of William and Katherine (Pierce) Cunningham and was a 1943 graduate of Milton Union High School. Gert married Bruce Bell on May 17, 1947 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Milton. He preceded her in death on June 19, 2013. She had been employed by General Motors in the payroll department from 1943-1947 and later at Sears from 1960-1977. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Janesville, the Elks Ladies from which she was just honored as the oldest living Elk, and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Gert was active in many card clubs, playing Euchre, 500, Bridge and many others. She loved to golf and never missed an opportunity to watch the Milwaukee Brewers or one of her great grandchildren's activities.

Gert is survived by her daughter, Linda (Frank) Donahue of Janesville; 6 grandchildren: Kim (Brian) Bailey of Janesville, Stacey (Jere) Johnson of Crystal Lake, IL, Shelley (Glenn) Meine of Elkhorn, Matthew (Angel) Pregont of Nashville, TN, Michael Pregont of Janesville, and Erica (Ray) Heberer of Janesville; 16 great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Smith of Janesville; and a brother, Glenn (Darlene) Cunningham of Milton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bruce; daughter, Kathleen O'Brien; 4 brothers: Bill, Bud, Joe, and John Cunningham; and by 2 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Janesville, with Rev. Stephen J. Umhoefer officiating. Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park. Visitation will take place on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY, Janesville, where an Elks Ladies service will take place at 6:30 p.m., and again on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass at St. Mary's.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the St. Mary's Cardiac Care Center, especially Dr. Jeong, and nurses: Jim, Aimee, and Tsetan and their staff as well as the staff of Edgerton Care Center for the loving care given to Gert.
