George Horton, age 98 of Portage, Wisconsin passed away peacefully Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the Columbia County Health Care Center in Wyocena, Wisconsin.
Memorial funeral services will be held Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 850 Armstrong Street, Portage with Pastor Alan Boeck officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. The interment service will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
He was born on June 16, 1915, in Portage to John and Anna (Koch) Horton. He was united in marriage to Amy E. Topham on Oct. 30, 1943. George was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. George has been a lifelong member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. George and Amy owned and operated Horton's Farm Market for many years. He always had a weed free garden that was very beautiful. He loved seeing his customers and many of them became good friends over the years. George loved flying his Piper Cub Airplane, playing shuffle board (which he became quite the pro winning many trophies), playing cards, and traveling south for the winter to enjoy Florida's nice warm weather. George's giving, loving nature will always be remembered and his family and friends will dearly miss him.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Gary) Herwig of Portage and Phyllis (Denny) Woll of LeMars, Iowa; four grandchildren, Cory (Mandi) Herwig of Portage, Kelly Herwig of Loves Park, IL, Katie Collins of LeMars, Iowa, Rick (Jill) Casson of LeMars, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, Benjamin Herwig and Marcus Herwig of Portage, Janae Casson, Kiera Collins, Kaynan Jara, Gavin and Keegan Pippett, of LeMars, Iowa. George was preceded in death by his wife, Amy (Topham) Horton; parents, John and Anna (Koch) Horton; a brother, Joe Horton; sister, Dorothy Fleming and sister Helen Meyer; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Elmer and Ethel (Stroud) Topham and brother-in-law, Charles Topham.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the Columbia Health Care Center Staff for the wonderful care they gave George.
