Francis X. Faherty, 76, of Platteville died on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. Rev. Faustino Ruiz will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the church. Francis was born on March 22, 1937 in Grant County, the son of Charles and Margaret “Maggie” (Linden) Faherty. Francis was united in marriage to Shirley Whitcher on September 11, 1965 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dickeyville. He graduated from Platteville High School in 1955 and attended the Mining School of Engineering for two years majoring in drafting. He served in the United States Army from August 24, 1960 – July 30, 1962 where he was a Military Policeman stationed in Hawaii. Francis was a diehard well driller for 50 years being the third generation of his family to work in well drilling. In 1988 he started Faherty and Son Well Drilling with his son, Jeff. In July 2007 Francis retired due to health issues. Francis was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville.
In the early 1970’s he went to Nodorft Airport to take flying lessons where he got his pilot’s license on December 3, 1977. Flying was a passion he truly enjoyed. He was an avid sports fan following the Badgers, Bucks and Bulls in basketball, the Milwaukee Brewers in baseball. He was a diehard Bear’s fan and always enjoyed watching them play the Packers, Vikings and Dallas Cowboys. Francis was always kind and gentle to everyone he knew.
Francis is survived by his wife, Shirley of Platteville; two children, Jeff (Kelly) Faherty of Platteville and their two children, Jacob and Shelby; Kimberly (Rick) Even of Hazel Green, WI; brothers and sisters, Harold Faherty of Platteville; Eileen Olson of Cuba City, WI; Keith (Joan) Faherty of Brookfield, WI; Ralph (Joan) Faherty of Platteville; Pauline Mishefski of Milwaukee; Rosemary (William) Baker of Platteville; Joseph (Delores) Faherty of Platteville; Karen (Bernard) Eastlick of West Chester, PA; Barbara (Dennis) Young of Reedsburg, WI; Patrick (Alice) Faherty of Columbus, MS; sisters-in-law, Jan (David) Biel of Medina, OH; Connie (Roger) Sue of Boscobel, WI; Jan Whitcher of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Charles, half-brothers and sisters, Paul, Maynard, Virginia Riley, Florence Gardner, Mary Morrissey, and Charles Faherty II; father and mother-in-law, William and Helen Bell and brothers-in-law, Jim and Jerry Whitcher.
