MADISON-Evelyn Loughran, age 88, died peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Heritage Senior Living, in Monona, Wis. Evelyn was born on July 3, 1925, in Mukwa, Wis., the daughter of William and Mary Backes. She was united in marriage to Lee Loughran on March 5, 1945, in Royalton, Wis. Lee preceded her in death June 5, 1992. They were married for 47 loving years.
Evelyn was an active member of the Catholic Church right up to her passing. She was generous with her time and resources. She was the president of the Women of Saint Bernadette during the time that her children were attending school. She was an active volunteer at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Catherine Loughran of Big Pine Key, Fla., Mary Tyson of Sarasota, Fla., Bonnie Loughran and Timothy Welnetz of Madison, Wis., James and Robin Loughran of Van Buren, Ark., Thomas and Lorchid Loughran of Minneapolis, Minn., Michael and Karen Loughran of Milwaukee, Wis., and John Loughran and Carol Cody of Austin, Texas. Evie is survived by eight grandchildren, Melissa Sargent, Kristin Banta, Samuel Kalinoski, Jennifer Vandenhogen, Nathan Loughran, and Sean, Caitlin and Clare Loughran; and ten great-grandchildren. She was one of 11 children. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Rolhoff and Rita Dennison; and two brothers, Zeke Backes and Ronald Backes.
A consummate mother and homemaker, Evelyn was an excellent cook. She enjoyed preparing meals for her family and sewing for her children. She played golf into her seventies and loved to dance, especially the polka with Lee. She enjoyed traveling and playing bridge and sheepshead.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 712 S. Pearl St., New London, Wis., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014.
Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. A special thank you to Agrace HospiceCare and Heritage Senior Living care staff, in Monona, for the love and compassion given to Evelyn and her family.
